Landscape Architecture: A Real-World Example
Imagine How Your Cincinnati Home Could Look with Professional Landscape Design
Cincinnati Landscape Architect Mark Bambach recently completed a front yard landscape concept for Joe Tekulve, founder of Paramount Lawn + Landscape. Joe and his family are so pleased with the design, that they asked us to share it with you.
You’ll see that this is a design for the front of a home, with a walkway from garage to porch and front door. The homeowner requested to meet several goals with the landscape:
- Offer a beautiful view from the street and driveway
- Create a pleasant experience when walking from the driveway to the front door
- Make the front porch an outdoor living space
- Frame attractive views as you look out the home’s front windows
Picturing Landscape Architecture
A black-and-white overhead schematic can be difficult to imagine as a real-life landscape architecture. Mark explains his design with both explanations and pictures:
“There are a few main design ideas I followed when developing this concept. I wanted to have a certain amount of repetition throughout the plan in order to give a balanced and unified feeling. At the same time, I wanted to use a certain amount of different plant types in order to keep the landscape interesting.”
The main types of plants that are repeated throughout the design are the Chestnut Hill Cherry Laurel, the Hakone Grass, and the Variegated Liriope.
The Chestnut Hill Cherry Laurel are evergreen shrubs which will serve as a backdrop for the landscape.
The Hakone grass is repeated in a few masses. Mark also has a planting of ajuga; as well as Hellebores. Hellebores typical stay evergreen in the winter.
Mark used the variegated Liriope as a border planting along the front of the beds.
The combination of the landscape architecture design and plant sample photographs really helps bring the finished project to life in our imagination. Mark also shared more thoughts with the homeowner, to explain the full benefits and risks of one of his plant recommendations:
“I just wanted to comment a little about the Chestnut Hill Cherry Laurel. They’ve come to be more popular around here in the last 20 years; however, their popularity comes and goes at times because they come with a risk. I would say that about every ten years or so, they can get severe damage when we get single-digit temperatures. At my parent’s house, I had a full planting of Otto Luken Cherry Laurel, which looked great for about 10 years until a severe winter knocked them out, and I replaced them with boxwood. However, people still like to use them. I think it is because they have a more interesting foliage texture than other evergreens; a little bit like Rhododendron foliage.”
