Time For Spring Cleaning!

 In Landscaping and Hardscaping

When we think of Spring Cleaning, it is typically the inside of our homes that we focus on. However, this is the best time of the year to take care of the small projects that have been piling up outside over the past winter.

Getting your lawn and landscape ready for spring doesn’t take much time or effort, but it will make a huge impact. Following the simple steps listed below will allow you to spend less time worrying about your property throughout the coming seasons and more time enjoying the sunshine.

Start by taking a step back and really look at your property. Check for any bare areas in your lawn. Any bare areas can be seeded to help promote new growth and a fuller, lusher lawn. Take a rake and scratch the exposed dirt areas with the tines. Spread your seed evenly and cover the area with straw. Make sure to water these areas daily over the next two to three weeks.

The next step is to help protect the grass that your already have. Apply a nitrogen based fertilizer to the areas that are not newly seeded. This fertilizer will promote growth and the bright green color that we all want in our lawns. Along with the fertilizer, apply a pre-emergent to prevent crabgrass and other pesky weeds from germinating.

After assessing and taking care of your lawn, it is time to check your landscaped areas, such as flower beds and gardens. Remove any weeds that have already germinated. Apply a product that will keep your gardens weed free throughout the year. Check with your local garden center or nursery before applying any products on your beds. They will be able to help you choose the best product to prevent weeds while protecting your soil and plants.

Finally, it is time to add some pops of color to your landscape. Planting perennials and annuals will provide you with a balanced look. There are so many options to choose from and each of them adds a different character and charm. After planting, finish the process by spreading a layer of mulch. Shredded black mulch looks the best, but you can choose whichever mulch you think will complement your home.

Now that you have completed your Spring Clean-Up, it is time to sit back and enjoy your home with friends and family. Getting the bulk of the work out of the way early will give you a much needed break when the heat of the summer rolls around. All you will need to do now is put in an hour or two of maintenance each week and your property will shine throughout the year.
